Transport policy is increasingly focusing on the expansion of the existing track system to accommodate increasing freight and long-distance traffic as well as the reactivation of tracks for municipal or privately operated local public transport. Noise pollution often leads to considerable reservations among the population regarding these infrastructure plans, especially when night-time freight traffic is planned.
In order to meet these reservations, ambitious goals have been defined for noise reduction in rail traffic. Innovative noise abatement measures and quiet vehicles will help achieve these goals. Especially in recent years, a large number of technologies have been developed and tested for this purpose. They can be taken into account thanks to the introduction of new calculation methods (Schall 03, CNOSSOS EU).
